Jannik Sinner has his sights set on defending his Australian Open crown this month, but the world no.2 admits it is going to be ‘difficult’ to do so.

The Italian tennis superstar is going for a potential three-peat in Melbourne.

“[It is] one of the goals for this season,” he told 9News. “It’s going to be very difficult to get back there, but I’m going to put myself in the game.

“I know that I’ve practised very well. The off-season was great [and] physically I feel good.

“You start the season by having some doubts, which is normal, but at the same time there is a lot of confidence because of certain results I’ve had in the past.”

The 24-year-old is eyeing another possible match-up with rival Carlos Alcaraz, who prevented Sinner from winning a career Grand Slam last year by defeating him in the French Open final.

Ranked as the top two coming into the Australian Open, the pair could only meet in the final with the defending champion adding: “[The rivalry] is something that motivates me and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Sinner begins his defence against Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
