Young Czechs Fruhvirtova/Bartunkova Carry The Torch

There’s been a theme in women’s tennis, and it’s been in existence for many decades: the Czech women just know how to produce talent. A nation of less than 11 million citizens has produced some of the finest talents that the game has ever seen, and two of the crop of future stars were in action on Sunday, as Nikola Bartunkova (20) and Linda Fruhvirtova (20) both scored straight-set wins to start the day.

Bartunkova defeated Australian wild card Emerson Jones, 6-2, 6-2, while Fruhvirtova topped American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-3, 6-3.

Nine Americans In Action

The reliability of the American women, with three players inside the tour’s Top 6 and five inside the Top 20, has become a theme in recent years, as a core group of talent has taken the torch from Serena and Venus Williams and still managed to stay not just relevant, but elite.

That standard of success has led to a bounty of talent, and it was on display on Sunday in the California desert as nine American women took the court for qualifying matches. Twenty-two-year-old Elvina Kalieva, who made her WTA main draw debut in Tennis Paradise in 2022, was one of the big winners on Sunday, taking out Ukraine’s Yulia Starodubtseva, 6-3, 6-1.

Kayla Day, who broke out as a 17-year-old in Tennis Paradise, reaching the third round on her debut, defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-2, 7-5, on Stadium 4. The World No. 185, who hails from Southern California and is now 26, is angling for her fourth main draw appearance.
