Matteo Berrettini delivered a scoreline that shocked the tennis world on Wednesday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, where he thrashed World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in just 49 minutes to reach the third round.

Wild card Berrettini was ruthlessly efficient against an out-of-sorts Medvedev, who did not have a single game point on his serve in the match. It is the first time Medvedev has lost a tour-level match without winning a game.

"I think it was one of the best performances of my life," Berrettini said. "I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.

"I faced two break points in the first game and then after that it felt I was playing better than him. I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing."

The Italian Berrettini has remarkably not lost a game across his opening two matches in the Principality this week. The 29-year-old advanced in the first round when Roberto Bautista Agut retired with Berrettini leading 4-0. The former No. 6 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will hope to continue his perfect week when he meets Joao Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech in the third round.

"I have been playing for a long time, so I felt it was really important to hold my serve at the start of the second set," Berrettini added. "It is a matter of a few points at the start and then when you go up two breaks you are more relaxed and the ball is [flying] out of your racquet."

It is also the first time Berrettini has won a tour-level match 6-0, 6-0, while it is his first Top 10 win since he beat Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo last season. In 2025, Alex de Minaur inflicted similar pain on Grigor Dimitrov, winning that quarter-final clash 6-0, 6-0 in Monte-Carlo.

Medvedev was competing on clay for the first time this season. The 30-year-old, who lifted hard-court trophies in Dubai and Brisbane earlier this year, struggled throughout on Court Rainier III, committing 27 unforced errors to fall to Berrettini for the first time in the pair's Lexus ATP Head2Head series (3-1).
