Xabi Alonso may already have his next job secured amid links to Liverpool

Liverpool’s woes continued over the weekend with a drab 1-1 draw against a Burnley side sat in the relegation zone.

Despite being held at Anfield, information emerging after the game said FSG were still backing Arne Slot.

There are not thought to be any plans in place to go down the path of Manchester United and Chelsea by removing the Dutchman mid-season

But one journalist has suggested that the club has already decided they will remove Slot, they just want to see out the 2025/26 season.

In terms of who could replace the 47-year-old, there has been a lot of talk around Xabi Alonso to Liverpool this term.

Alonso was linked earlier in the campaign during the Reds’ run of nine defeats in 12 across all competitions.

Then, after his Real Madrid exit in early 2026, a Liverpool return for the Spaniard has been mooted once more.

However, speaking to ESPN FC, journalist Mark Ogden has now heard that Alonso could be bound for Bayern Munich, with their current manager Vincent Kompany heading back to Manchester City.

He said: “But I just want to kind of drop something that I was told last week.

“So when the whole Man United situation was going off, and I was speaking to somebody talking about United and just a kind of a cheeky little, ‘why not consider Xabi Alonso?’ And obviously, I know the answer is that he played for Liverpool, etc. But he was like, no, no, no, that’s not going to happen.

“He said, and the story that this guy had been told, and he has a bit of insigh,t was that they said, no, Xabi Alonso will end up at Bayern Munich this summer, and Vincent Kompany will go to Man City because Man City wants Vincent Kompany back, and Xabi Alonso is an obvious fit for Bayern Munich. Because as much of a legend as he is at Liverpool, he’s also a great at Bayern Munich”

Doubts over Xabi Alonso expressed

Whether Alonso ends up at Bayern or not remains to be seen, but there has been some concern expressed over the Spaniard amid links to Liverpool.

The ex-midfielder cemented himself as a top manager by winning the Bundesliga title at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, his Real Madrid stint was short-lived and ended in disappointing fashion, with Steve Nicol suggesting Liverpool can’t ignore Alonso’s failure.

He said: “Xabi Alonso got a group of players and came up with an incredible story [at Bayer Leverkusen], got them together and played some incredible football. But when he took over a bunch of superstars he couldn’t handle it. So, why would you give him another big job like Liverpool?.

“If I’m picking in the world and Xabi’s one of them I’d certainly be thinking about it. But I’d be completely stupid to look at Real Madrid and say it’s nothing to do with Xabi, it’s Real Madrid. It’s not a straightforward yes or no.”
