It’s feared Green suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear after getting caught awkwardly in a Toby Bedford tackle, with scans set to ascertain the severity.

In telling vision, Green’s left leg was planted in the turf as he was twisted to ground.

The 25-year-old remained down on the field in the pain, with intraclub play stopped as the star ball-winner had to be assisted off.

“Changing direction, evading a tackle, he felt something in his left knee,” football boss Jason McCartney told media on Friday.

“Our medical team’s assessed - unfortunately, they’re confident that it’s an ACL injury, but we do need some scans that we’ll get in the next day or two to get some confirmation.

“But it’s looking (like) a worst-case scenario, but we’re hoping for the best.”

If Green is indeed sidelined for a significant period, youngster Harry Rowston figures to shift into a more prominent midfield role alongside Finn Callaghan and recruit Clayton Oliver.

Giants supporters and footy fans generally were excited to see Green and Oliver, two of the AFL’s toughest contest players, wax in the GWS midfield - a unit now seriously undermanned with Josh Kelly also out as the club prepares for another tilt at a maiden premiership.

The 115-gamer is the Giants’ reigning club champion and was part of last year’s All-Australian squad.
