Three years without Amancio

Three years ago, Real Madrid bade farewell to one of the greatest legends in its history: Amancio Amaro Varela. A key figure in madridismo, he played for our team from 1962 to 1976. Over those 14 seasons, he played 471 matches, scored 155 goals, and became a global football star.

At the time of his passing, Amancio was 83 years old and had been the honorary president of Real Madrid since 2022 for his contribution to the club. Amancio led the Real Madrid yeyé team that won the 6th European Cup, scoring a stunning goal in the final. In addition to winning 9 LaLiga titles and 3 Copa de España trophies as a player, he was one of the main driving forces behind the Quinta del Buitre during his tenure as a coach, during which he achieved a historic Segunda División championship with Castilla.
