Striker Ellen Wangerheim has completed her transfer to Manchester United from Hammarby on a three-year deal.

The Athletic reported last week that United were working on closing a deal for the 21-year-old, who has accrued interest from several Women’s Super League (WSL) clubs over the past year. Wangerheim signed a contract with Hammarby in 2024 until the end of the 2026 season.

“I am so excited. It feels amazing to be here,” Wangerheim said upon her signing.

“It’s a it’s a huge club with big history. So sitting here in this shirt is a proud moment for me. It’s always been my dream to move abroad and to play in another country, in Europe and in a really big football club.”

The Sweden international made 138 appearances for Hammarby, scoring 65 goals and played a significant role in the club’s historic double two seasons ago.

Wangerheim is United’s third signing of the January transfer window, following the acquisitions of forward Lea Schuller, who joined for Bayern Munich upon the expiration of her contract with the German champions, and right-back Hanna Lundkvist from Hammarby.

She joins former Hammarby players Julia Zigiotti Olme, Fridolina Rolfo, Anna Sandberg and Lundkvist at United.

Wangerheim has been deployed predominantly as a central striker for Hammarby, often playing with her back to goal to hold up the ball or dropping into pocket to receive and link play. She is highly regarded as one of Sweden’s most exciting young talents but one still developing with plenty of potential.

Wangerheim bolsters United head coach Marc Skinner’s attacking ranks, joining Schuller and Norway forward Elisabeth Terland, while striker Rachel Williams, 38, has left the club for Leicester City this window, as The Athletic reported last week.

Terland, 24, joined United in 2024 from Brighton & Hove Albion. The club confirmed they have triggered a one-year contract extension, seeing Terland remain at the club until 2027, along with the contracts of Ella Toone, Gabby George and Lisa Naalsund.
