Scandal in Spain: Real Oviedo Fan Who Insulted Marcus Rashford Could Face Prison Sentence

Spanish football is once again under scrutiny after a racism case that could end with serious legal consequences. A young supporter of Real Oviedo is facing a request for 15 months in prison, along with a financial fine and compensation, after directing racist insults toward Marcus Rashford, the forward of FC Barcelona.

According to reports from Spanish media and the official document from the Asturias Prosecutor’s Office, the incident occurred on September 25 at the Carlos Tartiere stadium during a match between the two teams. What initially appeared to be another tense moment in the stands quickly escalated into a legal case that could set an important precedent.

According to prosecutors, the accused — a 19-year-old fan — shouted a racist insult as Marcus Rashford prepared to take a corner kick during the match.

The moment was captured on video by a spectator in the stands and uploaded to social media. Within hours, the clip spread rapidly online, reaching nearly 29 million views in less than 24 hours, turning the incident into a global controversy.

The prosecution argues that the comment was clearly audible to other spectators and carried an evident racist intent directed at the player because of his skin color. According to the official account, the incident caused humiliation, frustration, and emotional distress, undermining the player’s dignity.

The Spanish Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested one year and three months in prison, along with an estimated $3,350 fine and more than $2,000 in compensation for Marcus Rashford due to moral damages.

According to the legal document submitted to the court, the acts are classified as a crime against dignity motivated by racist discrimination, under articles 510.2.a and 510.5 of the Spanish Penal Code, combined with a crime against moral integrity under article 173.1.

In addition to possible prison time, the accused could face several additional penalties, including a ban from participating in educational, sports or leisure-related activities for several years, as well as a prohibition from entering stadiums hosting competitions organized by LaLiga, the Spanish Football Federation, UEFA or FIFA for more than five years.

The incident involving Rashford is not the only recent controversy linked to the Real Oviedo stadium. According to reports from Spanish media, the Asturias Prosecutor’s Office has also filed another case against a different supporter for racist abuse directed at Kylian Mbappé, the star striker of Real Madrid, during a match played on August 24.

In that case, prosecutors are seeking one year in prison, along with a financial penalty and compensation similar to the Rashford case.
