Cricket news: Fans all say same thing after Ricky Ponting does it again in BBL commentary moment

1
Cricket fans are once again marvelling at the genius of Ricky Ponting after the Aussie legend perfectly predicted how the Sydney Sixers would dismiss Matt Renshaw in the BBL on Sunday night. Renshaw was dismissed for a duck as the Brisbane Heat had their season ended in a five-wicket loss to the Sixers.

Ponting was in commentary during Renshaw's brief stay at the crease, and very quickly identified how his downfall would come about. After Renshaw managed to keep out a fast yorker from Starc, Ponting said he would likely try and throw one a bit wider next time.

"They obviously want to bowl a bit straighter to Renshaw, they've got a heavy on-side field," Ponting said. "They've actually brought one over from the off-side to strengthen the on-side field.

"They're potentially looking for a ball that starts down the line of the stumps and tails away late. But I'd go the other way to Renshaw and hang one out on the fourth or fifth stump line when it's swinging away. Get another slip in."

Just seconds after Ponting's comment, Starc bowled the exact ball that Ponting had called for and Renshaw nicked one behind. Ponting said "just like that" with a wry smile.

Co-commentators Jason Richardson and Simon Katich couldn't help but laugh at Ponting's genius, which he's shown time and time again. He did a very similar thing during the Ashes when he predicted how Pat Cummins would get out just seconds before it occurred in the third Test. He then repeated the trick and told viewers how Alex Carey was going to get out during the fourth Test.

Cricket fans never tire of Ricky Ponting's genius

And despite continually showing he's got the sharpest brain in Australian cricket - if not the world - fans never get sick of watching it unfold. One person wrote online: "Punter is the cricket version of The Simpsons, predicting future events."

A second person wrote: "Punter is the Oracle." While a third added: "Genius…does it too often to be a fluke."

The Sixers' victory eliminated the Heat from a finals spot and sent them to second after the regular season. The Sydney side will now face the Scorchers in Perth on Tuesday night for a spot in the BBL final next Sunday night. The Hobart Hurricanes will host the Melbourne Stars on Wednesday night in an elimination clash, with the winner facing the loser of the Scorchers-Sixers game to decide the other finalist.
