No. 4 Men’s Tennis sweeps No. 13 Georgia, 4

Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis swept No. 13 Georgia, 4-0, at the Texas Tennis Center on Sunday. It was the ninth-straight win for the Longhorns, seven of which have been against top-25 opponents.

Texas secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 1 with Georgia taking No. 3 in between. The Longhorns then followed with singles victories by freshmen No. 67 Abel Forger at No. 3 and Lucas Marionneau at No. 6, and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar at No. 5 for the clinch.

The doubles point ended in dramatic fashion as the No. 25 duo of Marionneau and senior Sebastian Gorzny averted a tiebreaker and broke on a deuce point for a 7-5 win over No. 64 Arda Azkara and Santiago Giamichelle in the deciding match at No. 1. Prior to that, the No. 12 pair of Ojakaar and Eriksson downed Will Jansen and Gabriele Vulpitta, 6-4, at No. 2 to be first off the court, while Forger and senior Jonah Braswell came up short against Derrick Chen and Noah Johnston, 6-3, at No. 3 with freshman Kalin Ivanovski out of the lineup.

After doubles, Forger was first off the singles court with a decisive result for the second-straight match, defeating No. 60 Giamichelle, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Marionneau, who had returned to the lineup at No. 6 with Ivanovski out, gave Texas a 3-0 overall lead with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Salvador Price.

That left three other courts as a possible clinch for the Longhorns, but Ojakaar got home first with a pair of tiebreaker wins, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), over No. 77 Vulpitta at No. 5. In the other remaing matches, No. 3 Gorzny was in a second-set tiebreaker, leading No. 42 Azkara, 7-5, 6-6 (2-3), at No. 1, while Braswell was potentially two points from a win, leading Johnston, 6-0, 4-6, 5-0, at No. 4. Eriksson had also forced his match into a third set after dropping his opening frame, leading No. 30 Jansen, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 1-0 at No. 2.

The Longhorns (13-3, 4-0 SEC) will be back in action at the Texas Tennis Center against No. 7 LSU on Friday, March 6, at 6 p.m. CT.
