Korah grad heading to Super Bowl LX after raffle win

The Sault’s Dylan Garson is the winner of the 16th annual Korah Collegiate Super Bowl Raffle.

He and a friend or family member will head to San Francisco to see Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8.

Garson’s name was picked from a drum full of tickets at Korah Friday.

“I honestly couldn't believe I won it,” Garson told SooToday.

Garson, 20, an athletic Korah graduate and now a third year Algoma University business student, was watching the draw live on YouTube while travelling to Toronto for a post-secondary level track meet.

Garson, who graduated from Korah in 2023, competed for the school in cross country running, track and field, soccer, badminton, basketball and hockey.

Ironically, Garson didn’t play high school football for the Korah Colts.

“That was the one sport I never played because I never wanted to get hurt,” Garson said with a laugh.

Regardless, Garson rooted for the Colts and follows NFL football.

“I'm a massive fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. Everyone I know definitely knows that. I love the Eagles,” Garson said.

“They got knocked out of contention for the Super Bowl so I'm a little bummed out about that. I always liked the Buffalo Bills so now I’ll root for a team up north. Hopefully they can go all the way. That would be my second team to root for.”

Though Garson is a busy university student, he said he most likely will take the trip to see the Super Bowl.

“I've been to San Francisco once, a long time ago with my parents, so it would be awesome to go back.”

Tickets for the Korah Collegiate Super Bowl Raffle were $20 each.

The $34,495 USD prize package includes:

Round-trip airfare for two from Sault Ste. Marie to San Francisco

Five-night stay at a four-star San Francisco–area hotel

Lower bowl Super Bowl tickets located in the corner/end zone at Levi’s Stadium

Pregame tailgate event with open bar and food

Friday night welcome reception with open bar and food

Round-trip transfers for the airport and game day

Two deluxe Super Bowl gift bags

Daily breakfast for two

Funds raised through sales of raffle tickets pay for the prize package with the remainder going to Korah student programs.

“That's what everyone in the community buys the tickets for in the first place. You never expect to win, but it's always awesome to support Korah,” Garson said.

The winning ticket was pulled from the drum after Korah students enjoyed an afternoon of fun at the school’s gym Friday, throwing and kicking footballs and running an obstacle course.

Mustang Sally, Korah’s own student rock group, provided live musical entertainment.

Garson’s name as the raffle winner was announced to the student body by Amy Ward, Korah Collegiate principal.

“I’m very excited. This is such a really awesome event and the best part is the funds go back to students,” Ward said in an interview after the raffle.

$23,260 was raised over and above the cost of covering the prize, Ward said.

3,563 tickets were sold out of 6,000 printed.

Korah staff and families began selling tickets in the fall.

Tickets were still available for purchase earlier Friday.

“The funds raised help with busing costs for students if they're going away on a tournament. It all goes to extracurricular activities like Mustang Sally, Korah’s Musical Theatre, the art club and other clubs, athletics, different leadership initiatives,” Ward said.

Over $400,000 has been raised for Korah student programming over the years through the school’s annual Super Bowl raffles.

Ward said Korah appreciates the effort the school’s staff, families and numerous local businesses put into selling tickets for the annual raffle.

“Year after year they sell tickets and support this amazing initiative. It’s well established and kudos to the former principals, Sergio Iacoe and Steve Caruso who kept it going and established this tradition. It's amazing. It’s my first as Korah principal and I'm happy to have my first one under my belt,” Ward said.
