WT Drops Tightly Contested Battle to No. 6 Arizona State, 4

WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis lost to No. 6 Arizona State on Sunday at the Hurd Tennis Center, 4-3, in a back-and-forth battle.

The Bears (5-4, 1-1) fought hard against the top-10 Sun Devils (9-3, 1-1) but ultimately came up short.

THE RUNDOWN

The Bears came in hot, winning the doubles point to strike first. Kennedy Gibbs and Neda Rahimkhani fell to Lily Taylor and Aiya Nupbay, 6-1, but Baylor didn't let the early loss slow it down.

Na Dong and Alian Zack defeated their ASU opponents 6-3, followed by Zuzanna Kubacha and Gabrielle Villegas winning their match 7-5 to secure the doubles point for the Bears.

ASU responded immediately, dominating early in singles and winning the first set on all six courts. Vivian Ovrootsky defeated Gibbs first on Court Three, 6-2, 7-6, tying the match at one-all.

Baylor pushed the remaining matches to third sets. Zack pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win to give Baylor its second point, but ASU answered with Sarang Lim defeating Luna Ivkovic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, to even the score.

Dong responded with a strong, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, victory to put Baylor ahead 3-2. ASU tied it once again, with Sara Svetac defeating Kubacha, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, on Court Two.

It all came down to Mu-Jie Tzeng on Court Four against Taylor. After long rallies and tight points, Taylor pulled ahead, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

The Bears travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to face the University of Cincinnati on Friday, March 6, at 11 a.m.
