Bayern Munich’s Josip Stanišić talks through career achievements so far

For Josip Stanišić, the journey at Bayern Munich has been defined by patience, persistence, and a series of key moments that helped shape his career. From his early days in the club’s youth system to establishing himself at the professional level, Stanišić’s path has not always been straightforward, but it has been filled with milestones that helped him grow as both a player and a person.

Like many academy graduates, Stanišić worked his way through Bayern Munich’s youth ranks, gaining experience and responsibility along the way. His leadership qualities became evident early on when he was named captain of the club’s U-19 side. That role not only reflected his ability on the pitch but also the trust coaches and teammates placed in him. Another significant early achievement came in 2020, when he helped Bayern Munich’s reserve team win the 3. Liga title — an impressive accomplishment for a squad largely composed of young, developing players.

However, the turning point in Stanišić’s Bayern Munich career came in 2021 under then-head coach Julian Nagelsmann. At a time when many expected the defender to leave the club in search of opportunities elsewhere, Nagelsmann instead gave him a chance at the highest level.

“There have been a few, of course, since the U-17s. I became captain of the U-19s and won the 3. Liga title with the reserves in 2020. But above all, I think of my first game under Julian Nagelsmann in August 2021. He put his trust in me, and I performed well and fought my way into the team. Hardly anyone had expected that. A few weeks earlier, I had almost transferred. Fortunately, things turned out differently. The next step came in 2023 with my loan move to Leverkusen, where I developed a lot as a player and as a person,” Stanišić told FCBayern.com.

That loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen proved to be another defining chapter. Regular playing time and new tactical demands allowed Stanišić to continue refining his game while gaining valuable experience in a competitive environment.

Looking back, these moments illustrate how quickly a career can change in football. What once seemed like the end of his Bayern Munich journey instead became the beginning of a breakthrough, proving that persistence and preparation can turn unexpected opportunities into defining milestones.
