Sean McDermott thanked Buffalo Bills fans and the community in a statement Monday, hours after the organization fired him.“This community graciously embraced not only me but my family and in some ways helped raise our children over the last nine years,” he said in a statement obtained by NFL Network. “For that I say thank you to all of the teachers, coaches, and friends whom we met along the way … the ‘City of Good Neighbors!’ We love You! We will miss Buffalo.”The Bills fired McDermott after nine seasons, two days after Buffalo lost to the Denver Broncos 33-30 in overtime of the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.“Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past 9 seasons,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in announcing the firing. “But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia.”McDermott departs as one of the winningest head coaches in franchise history with a regular-season record of 98-50 and a postseason record of 8-8.His 98 wins are second all-time in franchise history behind only Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy, who won 112 games over 12 seasons and reached four Super Bowls.Under McDermott, the Bills made the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons, including the divisional round in six straight seasons. He and the Bills advanced twice to the AFC Championship Game (2020 and 2024).“For nearly a decade I have had the opportunity to wake up every morning as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, which has truly been a gift,” McDermott wrote. “I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Pegula family, the Buffalo Bills organization, and to the fans for allowing me to live out the dream of being a head coach in the NFL in this incredibly special place.”
