Fans want Gary Neville 'banned from Man Utd games' following Manchester derby

Football fans have called for Gary Neville to be banned from working on any Manchester United matches due to his comments during the clash with Manchester City.

In his first Premier League match since replacing former boss Ruben Amorim, interim manager Michael Carrick faced a baptism of fire against historic rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Given the recent form of both sides, the visitors were heavy favourites heading into the match particularly given the strong start of new signing Antoine Semenyo.

However, Carrick's United showed resilience in the match and picked up a 2-0 win in a massively impressive performance that many believe is the team's best in some time.

But not everyone watching was completely happy with the exciting match, as some fans have called on Sky Sports to ban Neville from commentary on United games for his behaviour during the derby.

As is often the case for United's biggest matches this season, Neville joined Sky Sports regular Peter Drury on commentary for the Manchester derby.

But his reactions to United taking the lead left some fans frustrated, as the United legend was heard willing Bryan Mbeumo on moments before celebrating the Cameroon international opening the scoring in the match.

Reacting to Neville's commentary, one fan wrote on X: "Gary Neville is either there to commentate or there to be a fan. Him backing away from his microphone to celebrate a goal but still be very audible to the audience is awful."

While a City fan added: "Pathetic, absolutely pathetic. Neville screeching on commentary as well, nothing like a bit of impartiality during a derby eh. F****** joke."

With one going as far as to claim: "They need to ban gary neville from commentating United games."

Another fan claimed that Neville's behaviour was an example of a wider issue with commentary, suggesting that both Neville and fellow Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher only speak about their former teams.

They claimed:"Having Gary Neville commentate Man U games is ridiculous! It might as well be MUTV! All he's spoken about is Man U in the first 20 mins! Same with Carragher doing Liverpool games!"

The result means that Manchester City have now failed to win any of their four Premier League games in 2026 and leaves Guardiola's side six points behind Arsenal, who face Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile United have moved to fourth in the table, level on points with Liverpool who face Burnley later on Saturday.
