Alex Eala delivered one of the tournament’s most heartfelt moments of the Indian Wells 2026 with a post-match tribute to Coco Gauff on International Women’s Day, March 8.

The 20-year-old Filipina tennis star advanced to the round of 16 after Gauff retired with an arm injury, but Eala made sure the spotlight did not rest solely on the result. In her on-court remarks, the world No. 31 praised Gauff both as an opponent and as a role model for women everywhere.

“I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women,” Eala said. “Among them is Coco.”

Eala went on to describe Gauff as “an amazing competitor and an amazing role model”, before wishing the American a speedy recovery following the abrupt end to their Indian Wells match.

Gauff later described the retirement as “a disappointing way to finish” and said the injury was unlike anything she had previously experienced.

“It felt like a firework was going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire,” she said.

Speaking in her post-match press conference, Gauff added that the issue may be nerve-related and that she planned to have it examined by her team.

Amid the difficult circumstances surrounding the match’s conclusion, Eala also used the moment to acknowledge another important figure in her life, her mother Rizza, who was watching from the stands.

“I want to thank her for being the amazing woman that she is and for helping me become the woman that I am,” she said. “And that goes for all mothers.”

Rizza responded by blowing kisses back toward her daughter after the tribute.

Eala will next face world No. 14 Linda Noskova in the round of 16. It will be their first meeting, with a place in the quarterfinals on the line.
