The first wave of NFL free agency saw the Seattle Seahawks lose three players and re-sign two. And there’s a pretty clear trend when you look at who left and who stayed, as Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard pointed out.

Seahawks Offseason Tracker: Free agents, draft picks and more

“One thing that jumps out to me with these signings is I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both (cornerback Josh) Jobe and (wide receiver Rashid) Shaheed have experienced the other side,” said Huard, a longtime football broadcast analyst and former NFL quarterback. “They’ve seen other organizations, just the way things are run.”

The 27-year-old Jobe played two seasons with Philadelphia after joining the Eagles as an undrafted rookie in 2022, but has blossomed into a starter on Seattle’s Super Bowl-winning defense. And Shaheed, who was also undrafted in 2022, was traded to the Seahawks during the 2025 season from the New Orleans Saints.

That means they’ve both had a look at how things are run at at least one other NFL franchise, unlike the three players who reportedly found new homes on Monday: running back Kenneth Walker III, pass rusher Boye Mafe and cornerback Coby Bryant. All three were 2022 NFL Draft picks by the Seahawks.

“The alignment that we talk about all the time that the Seahawks have that others don’t have – I don’t fault Ken and Boye at all in the moves that they made, and Coby. Good for all of them,” Huard said. “But they were all homegrown. They don’t know what it’s like to be outside of the VMAC. The commitment that the organization makes to their players and to their development.

“So kudos to them. But as you see these teams that have to go out of market and sign versus those that sign from within, there’s typically a win-loss with that. And there’s typically players that really don’t understand what life is like outside of this organization.”

See Huard’s full reaction in the video at the top of this post, and catch him on Brock and Salk from 6-10 a.m. weekdays on Seattle Sports.
