Milos Raonic has announced his retirement from professional tennis, bringing to a close a career that saw him reach a career-high world ranking of No 3 and contest the men's 2016 Wimbledon final.

Confirming the decision in a post on X on Monday (11 January), Raonic, 35, wrote: “The time has come, I am retiring from tennis.” He added: “This is a moment you know will come one day, but somehow you never feel ready for it. This is as ready as I will ever be.” Reflecting on his relationship with the sport, he said: “Tennis has been my love and obsession for most of my life,” and described himself as “the luckiest person” to have lived out his dreams.

Best known for his powerful serve, the two-time Olympian won eight ATP Tour titles and enjoyed one of his most successful seasons in 2016. That year, he reached the Wimbledon final after defeating Roger Federer in the semi-finals before losing to Andy Murray, and also made the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He finished the season ranked third in the world.

Born in what is now Montenegro, Raonic moved to Canada as a child and went on to represent the country throughout his career. He thanked fans, coaches, opponents and his family, and said of what comes next: “I won’t be slowing down.”
