A caterer has brought the world record for the longest fish roll to the northern German city of Rostock with a length of exactly 42.37 metres, the Record Institute Germany confirmed.

The catering team at the Ostseestadion (Baltic Sea Stadium) spent hours on Saturday morning laying out hundreds of Bismarck herring fillets, lettuce leaves, gherkins and onions, slotting the roll sections into one another and baking them together so that they count as a single roll.

The massive roll was assembled on the concourse of the home stadium of third-division football side Hansa Rostock, where sausages, rolls and drinks are normally sold during matches.

To achieve the record, the catering company W Holz said it had ordered 120 kilograms of herring in advance.

After the record attempt, the rolls were to be sold in and outside the stadium. All proceeds will go to the food banks in the north-eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV), where Rostock is located.

The record attempt is part of the “Hansa for MV” action day, which aims not only to raise money for the food banks but also to draw attention to organ donation.

Around 25,500 visitors were expected for Hansa Rostock’s home match against Viktoria Köln.

The previous fish roll world record of almost 31 metres was set about two years ago by the town of Göhren on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen. Before that, the neighbouring island of Usedom held the title.
