Fifa’s high ticket prices, use of dynamic pricing and taking a 30 per cent cut of any tickets sold on its resale platform (and many of these are being sold for more than their original price) prompted uproar from fans’ groups. In response, Fifa was forced to announce a limited number of tickets priced at $60 last month — about 1,000 per match.

LA 2028 has opened registration for fans around the world to enter a lottery to buy tickets. Those registering will be entered into a draw that will randomly assign time slots between April 9 and 19 to buy tickets for the Games.

LA 2028’s chief executive, Reynold Hoover, said organisers had already seen more than 150,000 people sign up to be volunteers at the Games.

Janet Evans, a four-times Olympic swimming gold medallist for the US and LA 2028’s chief athlete officer, cited her own experience of going to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as a fan.

She added: “As a 12-year-old that came to watch the games here in ’84, I was inspired to do what I do now. I think that making tickets accessible and affordable for everyone here in the city of Los Angeles is going to inspire young people.”
