In a statement on social media, the Canadian said: “This is a moment you know will come one day, but somehow you never feel ready for it. This is as ready as I will ever be.”

Raonic reached the Wimbledon final back in 2016, where he ultimately fell to Andy Murray in straight sets.

He also reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2014, as well as the 2016 Australian Open.

Having dealt with a number of injuries over the last few years, Raonic, aged 35, has now decided to call it a day on his career.

His last win was at Queen’s that year against home favourite Cameron Norrie.

Raonic and Nishikori played seven times at tour-level events, with the Japanese star leading the head-to-head 5-2.

They first clashed in the 2012 Japan Open final, where Nishikori came out on top in front of a home crowd.

Nishikori beat him again at the Madrid Open in 2014, before Raonic opened his account in the rivalry later that year at Wimbledon.

In their remaining two bouts in 2014, Nishikori emerged victorious, winning their fourth-round bout at the US Open, as well as another Japan Open final.

Raonic got his last win over him in the 2015 Brisbane semifinal, but Nishikori won their very last match at the Davis Cup later that season.
