Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals He Wants to Meet President Trump in Interview with Piers Morgan

Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, currently playing for the Saudi club al-Nassr, sat down with British journalist and TV personality Piers Morgan for a two-part interview released on 4 and 6 November. Since Morgan has had an on-and-off friendship with US President Donald Trump, it is not greatly surprising that he came up in the discussion. However, it may be surprising to some to learn that Ronaldo is actually quite fond of the incumbent POTUS.

Morgan brought up that fellow Portuguese António Costa, President of the European Council, gifted a Portuguese National Team jersey with Cristiano Ronaldo’s name and iconic #7 on it to President Trump in June, which Ronaldo had signed with the handwritten message ‘Praying for Peace’.

In response, Ronaldo shared that President Trump is one of the few people he would very much want to meet in person one day, but never had the chance. Morgan, given his personal relationship with Trump, noted that he could probably make it happen, and added that he believes President Trump himself would be keen to do it, as it would be a great promotion for next year’s FIFA World Cup co-hosted by his country, the United States.

‘One of the most important people, of course, is [the] US President,’ the Portuguese football legend elaborated, adding that he ‘can change the world’.

Morgan then steered the conversation into a lighthearted debate about who Ronaldo believes is the most famous person in the world today, suggesting that the title likely comes down to either Ronaldo or President Trump. Staying true to his competitive nature, Ronaldo eventually conceded that he considers himself more famous than the US President—making him, in his view, the most famous person on the Globe.

He also teased Morgan that, once their in-person meeting is arranged, he will reveal ‘something I share’ with President Trump that he had never shown before. The obviously curious Morgan, however, could not get any more information about the mystery from his interview subject.

Evidently, Ronaldo was also asked about subjects other than President Trump.

He was questioned about the mild controversy about him not attending the funeral of his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota, who had passed away at the age of just 28 in a car crash earlier this year. Ronaldo explained that he has not been in a cemetery since his father died, and also felt that his presence would have directed the attention away from the deceased.

Ronaldo also talked about Portugal’s recent World Cup qualifier against Hungary, which ended in a 2–2 tie after a last-minute equalizer by Dominik Szoboszlai. He told Morgan that he did not mind being subbed off in the 78th minute by head coach Roberto Martínez despite scoring two goals in the game, as he understands that there are tactical reasons for the decision. However, he also admitted that he probably would have felt differently about it earlier in his career.
