Manchester United hosted Manchester City at Old Trafford and the Red Devils produced a stunning performance in Michael Carrick’s first match in charge.

Michael Carrick is off to the PERFECT START at Man Utd, and he wants more!

Why do you think it went SO RIGHT for Carrick against City?

Amad Diallo was brought straight back into the United XI under interim boss Michael Carrick after his return from the Africa Cup of Nations duties with the Ivory Coast.

The 23-year-old Ivorian was deployed on the right wing, while Bruno Fernandes was placed as the No 10 and Patrick Dorgu took his place out on the left wing.

Amad linked up superbly well with Bruno Fernandes and Patrick Dorgu and the trio provided effective support to Bryan Mbeumo in the Man Utd attacking threat.

The Red Devils cemented their advantage only 11 minutes later, as Patrick Dorgu netted home from close range after latching on to a low Matheus Cunha cross.

Speaking on his podcast, Gary Lineker was deeply impressed by how the slight tactical change to Fernandes changed the overall dynamic of the Red Devils threat.

An absolute class act!

“So, yeah, I think it was a mixture of different things, probably the players and also putting Bruno Fernandes slightly more forward,” he said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“Bruno is absolutely outstanding, I thought. And it just looked more like a fit.”

Amad Diallo was a lively attacking threat and Lineker, much like he did with Fernandes, praised what Michael Carrick did with the position change for the player.

“You got, you know, I know he’s been away on [the] Africa Cup of Nations duty, but Amad on the right, but not playing as a wing-back,” Lineker added.

“And I mean, players that suit the positions and they just look more comfortable in their roles.

“And with that comes an energy and with that comes an enthusiasm and a belief.”

Speaking to Alan Shearer, Lineker admitted that the Red Devils could still be in contention for a Premier League top-four spot before the end of the season.

“Yes, you’re right, Alan, they’ve got to keep that, maintain that,” he said.

“And they’ve got every chance to do it. They’re not going to be playing too many games because they’re not in any cup competitions now and not in European football.

“So, they need to work on that. And they’re very close, of course, to the Champions League spots.

“And so, there’s, you know, maybe some reasons to be cheerful for the long-suffering people, poor fans at Old Trafford.”

Man Utd are fifth in the Premier League table and are one point behind fourth-place Liverpool ahead of their trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal on Sunday.
