Iwobi downplays Fulham’s European ambition

Alex Iwobi played down talk of European qualification after inspiring Fulham to a 3-1 Premier League victory over Sunderland, insisting the club will continue to take the season “step by step”, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria international scored once and provided an assist as Fulham secured maximum points at the Stadium of Light, moving into the top half of the table and strengthening their push up the standings.

The former Arsenal midfielder finished a swift counter-attack, calmly slotting past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs after meeting a precise through ball from Harry Wilson.

It is the third time in the league since joining Fulham that Iwobi has both scored and assisted in the same match, having previously achieved the feat against Liverpool in April 2025 and Brentford in September 2025.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Iwobi was asked whether Fulham are now targeting European football, he was cautious.

“We take it step by step. Onto the next game, we got the three points which was the aim, to climb above them. We take it game by game – that cliché saying – and see where we end up at the end of the season.”

The 29-year-old acknowledged the challenge posed by both the opposition and the playing surface.

“We knew it was going to be difficult, the pitch wasn’t great. We know if we wanted to climb up the table we had to get these points away from home,” he said.

“They have been very good at home and it’s good to get the result we wanted.”

Iwobi delivered the corner that Raul Jimenez headed home to give the visitors the lead before sealing the win late on.

Jimenez, who scored twice in the win, said Fulham improved after the interval.

“We tried to put our game on the pitch and we managed to do it better in the second half. We scored early and controlled the game after that,” he said.

On his own contribution, the striker added, “I had a good feeling since the beginning and I knew that I needed to do a great game, I needed these two goals. It’s good for me to be helping the team in the way I can to keep climbing the table.”

Iwobi’s latest display takes his tally to three goals and three assists in 21 Premier League appearances this season, underlining his growing influence as Fulham continue their steady ascent.
