KKR Get Major Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy Injury Update

Kolkata Knight Riders received a massive boost ahead of Match 15 at Eden Gardens as Sunil Narine has recovered from his illness. However, the Purple and Gold camp is not entirely stress-free. Spinner Varun Chakravarthy remains doubtful for Thursday’s 7:30 PM cricket clash against Lucknow Super Giants, per ESPN Cricinfo.

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ return of Narine could hardly have been better timed for KKR. One of the most important players in KKR’s history, the West Indian all-rounder has won three IPL titles with the franchise in 2012, 2014, and 2024.

In the 2024 title-winning season alone, Narine scored 488 runs, including his maiden IPL century of 109 against Rajasthan Royals, and claimed 17 wickets to win the MVP award. A fit Narine at Eden Gardens is an absolute nightmare for any batting lineup, including LSG’s.

Varun Chakravarthy Doubt Casts Shadow Over KKR

The Varun Chakravarthy situation, however, is a very real worry. The spinner has not bagged any wickets so far in his two IPL 2026 matches, besides conceding runs at an economy rate of 13.17. After a tough T20 World Cup 2026, where he gave away 64 runs in the semi-final against England, Chakravarthy is still trying to hit his top form this season.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane has, in fact, given his word to Chakravarthy that he will come good; however, with a very important home match on the cards, KKR’s top management is really scratching their heads about the set. If Varun is not there, KKR will be depending almost completely on Narine for the spin bowlers’ workload, and suffice to say, given his legendary status and having played as many as 191 IPL matches, he can very well do with it. But the worry about the squad depth is not unfounded, and LSG’s batsmen will be throwing a glance at ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌it.

KKR’s IPL 2026 Campaign So Far

Kolkata‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Knight Riders have several things that they need to prove with this match. Following their fairy tale title triumph in IPL 2024, KKR had a miserable 2025 season. They will be very eager to get back to the championship form. A win over Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday will not just increase their points count, but also send a very clear message to the rest of the competition: the defending champions are back. Every match at Eden Gardens this season is of great significance, and this one is no ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌exception.

Narine at the Top Changes Everything

The thing about a fit Sunil Narine is that he not only enhances the team’s performance but also significantly changes KKR’s image at the top of the order. When Narine begins the innings, he plays aggressive shots from the very first ball, exploiting most of the fielding restrictions and forcing the opposing captains into making defensive decisions in the initial six overs. LSG’s bowlers will find it difficult to bowl to him smoothly: if they bowl a full-length ball, he drives; if they bowl a short ball, he pulls. Additionally, his left-handed opening with the ball combined with his ability to bowl four overs of off-spin immediately after makes him the most dangerous powerplay weapon in world T20 cricket currently.
